When one talks about DESIGN, Italy is one of the first places that come to attention. Italy is recognized as being a worldwide trendsetter and leader in design, applied also to fashion and architecture.

Why and what makes Italian design so unique?
As the Italian architect Luigi Caccia claims, “Quite Simply, we are the best”. According to him, it is because Italians have “more imagination, more culture, and are better mediators between the past and the future”. In fact, all new designs are built upon the past.

A major source of Italian design’s uniqueness can be explained by the philosophical and aesthetic heritage of the humanist culture in Italy.
Almost every decade saw the emergence of new “philosophies” and “aesthetics,” which gave rise to innovative ideas that profoundly influenced the cultural debate on art and design: Futurism (Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Umberto Boccioni and Giacomo Balla),Metaphysical Painting (Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carrà), Rationalism (Giuseppe Terragni, Luciano Baldessari and Franco Albini), the Novecento Italiano (Mario Sironi, Giovanni Muzio and Gio Ponti) and, in the mid-1960s. Radical Design (Archizoom, Gaetano Pesce, Alessandro Mendini and several others) and Arte Povera (Michelangelo Pistoletto), which revived debate on the consumer society. Then, after a rather somber period in the 1970s, when Radical Design lost some of its drive, concepts of High Tech Rationalism pushed designers to find simple mechanical forms for this new age. This movement was followed by a reaction to the crisis of modernity in the late 1970s led by the Memphis Group (Ettore Sottsass) in the field of design, and by the Trans-avant-garde in the art world (Enzo Cucchi, Mimmo Paladino and Francesco Clemente).

In Accademia Riaci Design classes, we place big importance on developing each student’s imagination and creativity. At the beginning of the course, we focus on teaching extensively sketching techniques, as irreplaceable foundation for any design project. As our professors always stress: “without those skills, even if you try to design using advanced computer technology, you will meet many difficulties. Firstly, it’s essential to learn how to use your hand to convert ideas into tangible forms. Then, observing and analyzing many works, you will be able to increase your own imaginative skills”.

Foundations cannot be skipped. With our instructors’ professional guidance, students can learn many things and be involved in several activities, such as visiting exhibitions, researching new trends in exposition or trade shows.

Why don’t you join us in Florence? It’s the perfect chance to boost your creativity and imagination, while coming in contact with Italian style art & design, and their rich cultural and historical origins.
