After Studying a BA degree in Fashion Design in South Africa, Lara decided that she would love to study further and focus on a specific direction in the fashion industry. During her studies, she followed an internship at a company where she was taught how to make and design handbags out of leather and exotic leather skins.

She knew instantly that she would love to study further and learn more about shoes and decided to come to Firenze, Italy, the most famous city to learn more of leather art and shoes! She found Accademia Riaci and knew that the shoe making course that they had to offer was exactly was she was looking for.

Here she wishes to learn the highest level of shoe making techniques and to be able to follow her dream to become a designer with the knowledge of not only fashion, but also the art of shoe and handbag design.

Shoe Making 6-One Year Course 2016

During this week we were all really excited as we almost finished our first test Oxford shoe. We were taught how to use all the special tools needed to make the decorations on the shoe and we all had a lot of fun trying out the different techniques and designs. I used some of the leather that I had left from the previous week to make my test shoe and am very pleased with how it turned out. Next week when we receive our lasts, we will finally be making our own designed pair of oxford shoes.

This is my completed mock up for the oxford shoe. After doing this you can decide whether you are happy with your design and make change where you need before starting the final shoe.

Here you can see the mock up of the upper and then also the upper out of leather that I made from old pieces of leather that I had left. This is the stage just before the lasting process begins.

For our art visit on Friday we went to the Strozzi Palace. This palace is really special and unique as it is one of a very few sites in Florence still remaining from the Renaissance period. This room is called the parrot room because of the parrot wall paintings.

We were also able to see very special handmade lace pieces on display in the palace that was made by the women from that time.

On Friday afternoon I was really excited to move into my new apartment very near to the Pitti palace.
