After Studying a BA degree in Fashion Design in South Africa, Lara decided that she would love to study further and focus on a specific direction in the fashion industry. During her studies, she followed an internship at a company where she was taught how to make and design handbags out of leather and exotic leather skins.

She knew instantly that she would love to study further and learn more about shoes and decided to come to Firenze, Italy, the most famous city to learn more of leather art and shoes! She found Accademia Riaci and knew that the shoe making course that they had to offer was exactly was she was looking for.

Here she wishes to learn the highest level of shoe making techniques and to be able to follow her dream to become a designer with the knowledge of not only fashion, but also the art of shoe and handbag design.

Shoemaking One-Year Course (n. 26)

After returning from my amazing weekend it was time to jump back into work and start stitching my dads boots. My best friend also came to visit me that day and is staying for a whole week! I showed her around Florence and she visited all the touristic sights while I was working in class.

For the Tirolese stitch, a whole separate welt it sewn to the insole and upper of the shoe. This is not an easy process and you need to be exceptionally precise in order for the stitches to look the same size on the outside of the shoe.

A special tool with a curved point is used to make the holes for the thread to pull through. After every stitch is sewn, the next whole is made for the next stitch.

On the Wednesday evening me and my friend went for a run up to Piazzale Michelangelo, watched the sunset with a beer, and then ran back after. It is honestly one of the most incredible views of Florence.

Here you can see the stitches on the outside of the welt. The welt is sewn all around the border of the shoe and then reconnected at the starting point.

Of course, a gelato is a must!

On the Friday afternoon my friend and I travelled to a place at the see called Castglioncello with some friends from class.

We had such a wonderful time at the see and also had the best seafood ever!

On Sunday evening we were on our way to a party and had to stop for the incredible sunset.
