Period: Sept. 5,2016-Apr. 28,2017
I worked in Japan for about 10 years but my former job had nothing to do with shoe making. I simply liked leather working as a hobby. I used to make small items such as leather wallets on my days off. For this past 2 years, I studied every week at a shoe making school in Kobe, Japan. I totally enjoyed the process of how my idea became actual shoes, so I kept making shoes on weekends even though I was tired from my weekday’s work. It takes a long time to make 1 pair of shoes, but I just love the shoe making process itself.
I quit my job 1 year ago and decided to come to Florence to study shoe making. I took Italian lessons for 4 months from this May, and I am now taking shoe making lessons in Italian. There is so much I need to learn now, but I hope to enjoy this learning experience.

Shoe Making 14-Master Course 2016 (Student2)
It’s in the middle of December now and the city is in a festive mood. Duomo is beautiful with a big Christmas tree in front of it. All the ornaments on this tree are the red symbol marks of Florence. The simplicity is really cool.
This kind of hut is built near the church before the Christmas season every year. This decoration may not be familiar with the most of Japanese people, but I felt that this was very important to the Christian people.
To celebrate the year end class today, there was a Christmas party at school with students from other courses. This is a homemade cheesecake made by Jo. She always makes desserts for us, so I shall call her “Shoe Making Course’s patissier”.
I went to visit a restaurant where my friend from Chef Training Course is currently doing an intern. A dish of cured raw hams is a typical Tuscan appetizer all year around.
Although meat dishes are popular in this region, vegetables are also tasty. This soup is a bowl of minestrone. It is so good during the cold season.
Italian dishes are not only pasta or pizza. It varies depending on the region, and ravioli represents the Tuscan cuisine. It’s very big in size and there are various stuffing inside such as juicy ragu sauce.
Prof. Angelo demonstrating Goodyear stitches. We put holes on the groove of the intermediate sole beforehand to make it easier to stitch evenly.
Left shoe is after stitching, and the right one is before stitching and with no welt yet. It took over 3 hours to sew just one shoe. I finally got an okay from the professor.
After finally getting together both soles, I glued metal shanks on both soles as usual. It’s indispensable for adding strength to the shoes.
After gluing shanks, grooves are filled in with thin leather or cork. This makes the intermediate sole flat so the outsole fits on the top and sticks to it well. There are many more steps to follow after this step, as they are Goodyear shoes. And that will be another story next year.
