To add more practical experience in my career, I decided to study in Florence, the home of restoration work. I wish to improve my painting restoration techniques by experiencing various types of restoration works as well as learning the latest restoration techniques. I am looking forward to letting you know about my daily life in Florence and my weekend visits to churches, museums, and so on.

I went back to the restoration work of the picture that I finished washing. This is the backside of the picture with the wood frame off. Since it has been about 100 years since the last restoration, it’s quite dirty with accumulated dust and soot. By using a special blade, I got rid of the dust and then put it into a new wood frame.

Then I filled in the defects with the mixture of plaster and glue. After that I shaped the filled parts by scraping with a blade. You have to make the room as dark as possible and light the picture so any unevenness shows up as a shadow.

After the fill-in fluid dried and hardened, I scraped it to the level of the surrounding paint color. Then I rebuilt the precise brush traces using curved blades and skinny brushes.

On the weekend, I went to see Mulinaccio at Scandicci just outside of Florence. There is an old mill made back in 1600’s with a beautiful arch.
It’s not in use since 1730’s, but it still remains beautiful together with surrounding nature.
Great place to go for a walk in a clear air.
