🇺🇸 The jewelry making course I am taking this time is a little different from other courses in that there are multiple classes in one course. The course timetable itself is divided into each class unit, and the teacher is different for each class. Specifically, there are four classes: Jewelry Making, Engraving, Stone Setting, and Jewelry Design, and what is taught in each class is different. First, in the Jewelry Making class, we cut metal with a scroll saw to create the desired shape, and then process it to create the base part of the jewelry. On the first day, I was able to make a brass ring, and on the second day, I started working on a leaf pendant. It’s not that difficult to use a jigsaw once you get used to it, but it was difficult to make small movements such as curves, and I broke the blade several times in the beginning.

🇯🇵 私が今回受講しているジュエリーメイキングコースが他のコースと少し違う点は、一つのコースの中に複数の授業があることです。コースの時間割自体がそれぞれの授業単位で分かれており、授業ごとに先生も違います。具体的には、Jewelry Making（ジュエリーメイキング）、Engraving（彫り）、Stone Setting（石留め）、Jewelry Design（ジュエリーデザイン）の四つの授業があり、それぞれに教わることが違います。まず、Jewelry Makingの授業では、金属を糸鋸で切って好きな形を作り、それを加工することによって、ジュエリーのベースとなる部分を作ります。初日だけで真鍮の指輪を作ることができ、二日目からは葉っぱのペンダントトップの制作に取り掛かりました。糸鋸は、慣れて仕舞えばそこまで難しくはないですが、カーブなどの細かい動きが大変で、最初の方は刃を何度か折ってしましました。

🇺🇸 Next, in the Engraving class, we learned about Florentine engraving, which uses a special knife to draw fine lines. This knife is very difficult to handle and I cut my finger several times on the first day. It’s a very difficult technique, but it’s also a beautiful technique, so I want to learn it quickly.

🇯🇵 次に、Engravingの授業では、専用のナイフを使ってフィレンツェ彫りという細かい線を描く彫りを習いました。このナイフの扱いがとても難しく、初日であった今回は何度か指を切ってしまいました。とても難しい技術ですが、その分美しい技術でもあるので、早く習得したいです。

🇺🇸 In the Stone Setting class, we also use a special knife to dig a hole to hold the stone. Digging is very difficult here, but sharpening knives is very difficult. I took it home and practiced sharpening my knife, so I hope to sharpen it well next week.

🇯🇵 Stone Settingの授業では、こちらもまた専用のナイフを使って、石を留めるための穴を掘ります。ここでは掘ることも大変ながら、ナイフを研ぐことがとても難しく、力加減やナイフの角度などがなかなかうまくいかずに、何度も直されました。家に持ち帰ってナイフを研ぐ練習をしたので、来週はうまく研ぎたいです。

🇺🇸 In the jewelry design class, I learned how to draw a perspective drawing, which is the foundation of design. I didn’t have graph paper, so I drew a three-sided drawing on a blank piece of paper, but it was very difficult to draw the frames in the correct proportions.

🇯🇵 Jewelry Designの授業では、デザインの基礎となる透視図の書き方を学びました。方眼紙を持っていなかったため白紙に三面図を書いたのですが、枠を正しい比率で書くのがとても難しかったです。

🇺🇸 And I also had a home cooking lesson on Friday this week. The chef actually taught me how to cook while making it, which was very helpful and fun. I actually made the “pomodoro” that I learned over the weekend, and I was very impressed with how delicious it was.

🇯🇵 そして、今週は金曜日にホームクッキングのレッスンも受けました。シェフの方が実際に作りながら調理方法を教えてくださり、とても参考になったし、楽しかったです。実際に週末に習ったポモドーロを作ったのですが、とても美味しく作ることができて、感動しました。

🇺🇸 Outside of school, I went to Pisa for Cultural Activities, ate gelato with my friends, went shopping at the market, and had a lot of fun while experiencing various things. I think that you are spending a very fulfilling time in Italy for a week. I’ll do my best again next week.

🇯🇵 また、学校外の時間では、Cultural Activityでピサに行ったり、友達とジェラートを食べたり、市場に買い物に行ったり、ショッピングをしたり、さまざまな経験をしながらとても楽しく過ごすことができました。イタリアに来て1週間、とても充実した時間を過ごせていると思います。来週もまた頑張ります。
