It’s finally the last week of my Italian metal engraving study abroad program (tears)
Honestly, it feels like it flew by in the blink of an eye! That’s my current feeling. But looking back, I truly realize every single day was packed and I did so many things. Taking the plunge to come to Europe alone gave me countless experiences beyond words. I’m grateful to everyone who gave me this opportunity and supported me ^^
On one hand, I’m feeling down about leaving behind these days immersed in metalwork and returning to reality. On the other, I’m excited to put what I learned on this trip to use. It’s a complex mix of feelings, not exactly a maiden’s heart, but definitely fluctuating.

なんかほんとあっという間だったんですけど！というのが今の感想です。ですが振り返ってみると、ほんとに毎日が濃くていろんなことをしたなぁと実感します。思い切ってヨーロッパに一人でやってきて、言葉に尽くせないほどのたくさんの経験ができました。機会を与えてくれ、サポートしてくれたたすべての人に感謝です^^
その一方で彫金三昧の日々が終わり現実に戻るのが憂鬱だったり、でもこの留学で学んだことを活かすのが楽しみだったり、揺れ動く乙女心ならぬ複雑な気分です。

Well, starting this week is the Florentine engraving class I’ve been looking forward to. Mr. Daniel is the metal engraving instructor, and starting this week, he’ll be replaced by Mr. Carlo, the engraver. In preparation for this, I purchased two knives for Florentine engraving (in Japanese traditional engraving, we use a tool called a chisel, but here it’s a knife). Actually using them, I noticed a difference: in Japanese carving, you use a small hammer to strike the chisel while carving. The Florentine carving knives, however, have small mushroom-shaped handles. You grip these handles and carve, which makes it easier to feel the carving and seems more comfortable. But whether I can actually do it is another matter entirely… lol. On the first day, we practiced tracing fine lines drawn on paper with the knife to make straight lines. I was surprised at how intensely focused I became on drawing straight lines, and two hours flew by in an instant. After a short break, we resumed drawing lines relentlessly. But for some reason, this was incredibly enjoyable… Everyone worked diligently, absorbed in their tasks.

さて、今週からは楽しみにしていたフィレンツェ彫の授業です。ダニエル先生は彫金の先生で、今週からは彫師のカルロ先生に代わります。これに備えて、フィレンツェ彫用のナイフ（日本の和彫ではたがねという道具を使いますが、こちらではナイフ）を二本購入しました。実際使ってみると、和彫りでは小さな槌（つち）を使ってたがねを打ちながら使用するのですが、フィレンツェ彫のナイフは小さなキノコ状の持ち手がついており、それをグリップして彫り進めていくので、手の感覚が伝わりやすく、やりやすいと感じました。ですが、実際できるかどうかは別問題で…笑　初日は細かく引いた線をナイフでなぞってまっすぐに線を引く練習です。直線を引く作業に驚くくらい集中して、あっという間に2時間がたっていました。その後小休憩して、またひたすら線を引く。でもなぜかこれがとても楽しくて…皆もくもくと作業に集中しました。

8/5 Day 2
Well, today is the second day of the carving class. Continuing from yesterday, we practiced drawing lines again. We traced curves with a knife to carve them, but I struggled to get the feel for the right amount of pressure! If you press too hard, it’s no good, but if you don’t press enough, the knife slips and it’s hard to carve just right. However, time flew by, and soon the teacher suggested a few carving designs to incorporate into our pieces. They were incredibly advanced designs that I seriously don’t think I can manage, haha.
They seem like good goals to aim for. Well, since this is the last week, I decided to revisit the restaurants I’d been wanting to try, listing them up again for lunch and dinner. I ended up at a lovely bistro in the area around my favorite, calmly atmospheric San Spirito Church. The temperature wasn’t too high, so I sat on the terrace and enjoyed lunch! The pasta was so delicious, and since I’d been lacking in vegetables, I ordered a salad as an appetizer. After that, I enjoyed walking around Florence before heading home.

さて、今日は彫の授業の二日目です。昨日に引き続き、今日も線を引く練習。曲線をナイフでなぞって彫っていくのですが、力の入れ具合を体得するのに苦戦しました！力が入りすぎてもいけないし、入らなくてもナイフが滑ってしまいなかなかいい具合に彫れません。しかし時間はあっという間で、そろそろ作品に入れる彫のデザインを先生がいくつか提案してくれます。とてもじゃないけど自分ができる気がしない高度なデザイン、笑
いい目標になりそうです。さて、今週は最後の週ということで、行ってみたかったレストランをもう一度リストアップして、ランチにディナーに行ってみることにしました。やはりお気に入りの落ちついた雰囲気のサンスピリト教会のあるエリアで素敵なビストロに入ってみました。またそこまで気温が高くなかったので、テラスに座りランチを楽しみました！パスタがおいしすぎて、野菜不足になっていたので一応前菜にサラダをオーダー。その後フィレンツェの街歩きを楽しみながら家に帰りました。

8/6 Day 3
Today we started practicing drawing lines along patterns. In Japan, when learning carving, it seems you spend ages just practicing drawing lines. But here, well, it’s a four-day intensive course, so we’ve already moved on to tracing patterns. I’m getting much smoother at it, without applying too much force, but if I let my guard down, the knife slips. I carve while calming my mind. But the teacher is truly amazing.

今日は線の練習から図柄に沿って線を引く練習です。日本で彫を習っていると、まず線を引く練習をひたすらしているようですが、こちらではまあ4日間の集中ということもあり、もう図柄のトレースに移ります。だいぶスムーズに力が入りすぎずできるようになってきましたが、気を抜くと、ナイフが滑ってしまいます。心を落ち着けて彫っていきます。しかし先生は本当にすごいです。
For lunch, I decided to try a place I’d actually wanted to visit for dinner! It’s a trattoria with the warm atmosphere of a cute Italian country house. I ordered an appetizer called Polenta from the menu. It had a crispy texture, like Japanese hash potatoes, and was incredibly delicious! I also had Arrabbiata spaghetti and a medium-bodied red wine. It was so delicious every day that I wondered if I’d even crave Japanese food again once back home. Dinner was at Trattoria L’Oriuolo. This was my second visit in a row. I was in the mood for meat that day, so I chose pork, which is unusual for me. It was a unique dish marinated in olive oil and Marsala wine, and it was absolutely delicious. I got carried away and even had an after-dinner drink, so I was a little tipsy on the way back!

さて、お昼は本当はディナーに行ってみたかったお店に、行ってみることにしました！かわいいイタリアの田舎家の温かい雰囲気のトラットリアです。メニューにあったPolenta（ポレンタ）という名前の前菜をオーダーしてみました。日本でいうハッシュポテトの様なカリっとした食感がとてもおいしかったです！で、アラビアータスパゲティとミディアムボディの赤ワインも一緒に。もう毎日おいしすぎて日本に帰ったら、和食をまた食べたくなるのか謎でした。ディナーはTrattoria L’Oriuoloへ。以前に続けて二度目です。この日はお肉の気分だったので、珍しくポークをチョイス。オリーブオイルとマルセらワインに付け込んだ珍しい料理、とてもおいしかったです。調子に乗って食後酒まで飲んでしまい、帰りはほろ酔いでした！

8/7 Day 4
Today is finally the last day of the jewelry lesson. It flew by, and it still doesn’t feel real. But now, I’m finally going to engrave the ring I made for the engraving work. The teacher thought up designs for each of us and showed us samples. My ring design features a beautiful traditional geometric pattern. My hands hurt from days of practice, and the knife just wouldn’t glide as smoothly as I wanted, lol. Before I knew it, class was over. I didn’t get as far as I’d hoped, so I’ve got homework to do back in Japan… After class ended, I was actually given a certificate of completion! A splendid certificate printed on beautiful paper. I thoroughly enjoyed these two months! I truly feel it will be a huge plus for my future jewelry design. Thank you so much, teacher, and everyone ^^

今日がいよいよジュエリーレッスンの最終日です。あっという間でいまだにあまり実感はないですが、彫を入れるために作った指輪にいよいよ彫を施していきます。先生が一人ひとりデザインを考えてくださり、見本を見せてくれます。私のリングのデザインは、伝統的な幾何学模様が美しいデザイン。連日の練習で手が痛くて、思う通りにナイフが進んでくれません、笑　そんなこんなで、あっという間に授業終了。思っていたよりも全く進まず、日本に帰ってからの宿題ができました… 授業終業後になんと修了書をいただきました！素敵な紙に印刷された立派な証書。2か月間、楽しみました！今後のジュエリーデザインに大きなプラスになったことは間違いないと実感できました。先生、みなさん、本当にありがとうございました^^

Today I went to Giotto, a famous pizza place near my home! I’d had takeout before, but this was my first time dining in ^^ I went with a Japanese student staying at the same apartment building, owned by the same landlord. She’s doing an internship at a gelato shop in the next town over. For our last night, we naturally ended with Chianti. We shared the recommended Melanzane pizza and the Cherry Tomato pizza. They were truly delicious. The quality of the ingredients really shines through in their simple menu, and the wine flowed freely. The neighborhood was quiet and relaxed, and since we walked back, we took our time. We took the leftovers home, and the staff mentioned that pizza tastes best on the second day. lol

今日は自宅近くにある、ピザの名店Giottoへ行ってきました！テイクアウトでは食べたことあったんですが、お店に入るのは初めて^^ 同じアパートの同じオーナーさん宅にステイしている日本人の生徒さんと一緒にいきました。彼女は隣町でジェラートのインターンをしている方です。最後の夜はやはりキャンティでしめます。おすすめのメランザーネのピザとチェリートマトのピザをシェアしました。やはり本当においしい。素材が良いのがシンプルなメニューだけにはっきりとわかり、ワインが進んでしまいました。ご近所のみはまったりしていて、帰りも徒歩なのでのんびりできました。残りはテイクアウトしましたが、お店の人曰く、ピザは二日目が一番おいしい、のだそうです。笑

8/8 Day 5
Today is Friday. My last free day in Florence. I bought so many ingredients—olive oil, wine, honey, and more—that there’s no way I could carry it all in my suitcase. So, I decided to ship my luggage! I used M&M, a Chinese-run company popular among Japanese students?! It’s vacation season now, so it’ll probably take a while to arrive, but I figured it might be nice to get Italian souvenirs when I’ve almost forgotten about them. There was a cute pug-like dog at the shop. Looking closer, it started to look like Stitch and was adorable♡ After that, I wandered into the nearby Central Market and bought more olive oil, lol.
The shop lady introduced me to various oils, letting me taste them and teaching me how to use them. Somehow, we ended up talking about the moon and hit it off. Actually, my name is inspired by the moon (full moon), so we got into a bit of a spiritual conversation from there. We immediately connected on Instagram, and since she also loves jewelry, we got excited talking about jewelry again ^^
We had delicious cappuccino at a cute sweets shop in the market, and finished with gelato at Barrochino. I wonder how many times I’ve been there, lol
Then, when I got home, it was time to say goodbye to my landlord. (She was closing her shop for vacation starting this weekend.) We’d been together for two whole months, so we were both in tears. Goodbyes have always been hard for me. She’s like a mother, a responsible shop owner, and my landlord. She gave me so much advice about the jewelry business too—I truly respect her. We said goodbye, looking forward to meeting again someday. She really values following your passion. So, I decided I’ll keep living that way from now on…

今日は金曜日。フィレンツェで過ごす最後のフリーの一日です。オリーブオイルやワイン、はちみつなどたくさん食材を買っていたのでとてもじゃないけどスーツケースでは運べません、というわけで荷物は配送することにしました！日本人学生御用達？！のM＆Mという中華系の業者さんです。今はバカンスシーズンで届くのはだいぶ先になりそうですが、忘れたころにイタリア土産が届くのもまたいいかなと思いました。お店にかわいいパグ？のような犬が。よく見るとスティッチに見えてきてかわいい♡　その後近くにあった中央市場にふらりと入り、また買っちゃいました、オリーブオイル、笑
お店のお姉さんがいろいろ紹介してくれるオイルを試食したり、食べ方を教わったりして、そのうちなぜか月の話になったところから意気投合。実は私の名前は月（満月）にちなんだ名前で、そんなところからちょっとスピリチャルな話になりました。さっそくインスタつなげて、彼女もジュエリー好きだったので、またジュエリートークで盛り上がりました^^
市場のかわいいスィーツ屋さんでおいしいカプチーノを飲み、最後はBarrochinoのジェラートで。もう何回通ったことでしょう、笑 そして、家に帰ると、大家さんとお別れです。（週末からお店を閉めてバカンスに行くため）二か月もお世話になったので、お互い涙、涙でした。さよならはいつでも苦手です。お母さんであり、お店の責任あるオーナーでもあり、大家さんでもある彼女。ジュエリーのビジネスについてもいろいろなアドバイスをくれて、本当に尊敬します。また会える日を楽しみに、お別れしました。パッションに従って行動することをとても評価してくれます。だから、これからもずっとそうやって生きていこうと思いました…

8/9 & 10 Day 6 & 7
The day arrived to return home after my two-month metalworking study abroad in Florence. My luggage was shockingly heavy!!! I seriously doubted if I could even check it in, but I left home early anyway. I’d bought some lovely jewelry here and gotten really into shopping, so everyone kept reminding me not to forget the tax refund process. I almost stopped for coffee at the airport… but instead, I went straight to handle it. Since August 9th was peak vacation season, the tax refund counter on the second floor was closed. So, if you’re returning during this time, be warned, haha. You’ll need to do it at the currency exchange counter on the first floor.
Well then, bidding Florence farewell, I waited for my connecting flight in Frankfurt. Here, I had lunch again with German beer and pretzels. German beer is delicious!
I really wanted to sleep like a log on the return flight, but the guy next to me was an anime fan going to Japan for the first time, and he was watching “The Apothecary’s Soliloquy” the whole time. He kept talking to me about needing to go to the bathroom or whatever, so I couldn’t sleep, haha. What a pain…
On that return flight, I thought to myself: despite having two kids, work pressing down hard, transferring to a new school in September, and my husband’s grueling schedule—amidst all this, I’m so glad I came to Italy driven solely by my desire to pursue jewelry. Giving up and thinking “maybe it’s impossible” is far easier than taking that courageous first step. But this step has undoubtedly become a huge one in my life. If you’re hesitating, thinking “I want to go, but maybe it’s impossible,” I strongly urge you to take that courageous step! Even if it seems impossible, you might just make it happen. And the path that opens up beyond that step is far greater than you could ever imagine. Finally, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made this opportunity possible. It was an incredibly enjoyable two months. Thank you so much!

フィレンツェでの2か月の彫金留学を終えて帰国する日になりました。荷物がびっくりするくらい重い！！！これでチェックインできるのか果たして疑問でしたが、まあ家を早めに出発。こちらでいくつか素敵なジュエリーを購入したり、ショッピング熱がさく裂してたので、Tax Refundの手続きをくれぐれも忘れないようにといろいろな人に言われていたので、空港についてコーヒーでも・・・となりそうなところ、手続きを済ませました。帰国日の8/9はバカンスシーズン真っ最中なので、二階のTax Refundはクローズしてましたので、この時期に帰国される方はご注意ください、笑　1階の両替所での手続きになります。
さて、フィレンツェに別れを告げ、フランクフルトで乗り換え便を待ちます。ここで、またドイツビールとプレッツエルでランチ。おいしいです、ドイツビール！
帰りの飛行機では爆睡したかったのですが、隣の席になったお兄さんが日本に初めて行くアニメファンの方でずっと「薬屋の独り言」を見ていました。ことあるごとにトイレにいくとか、なんだとかで話しかけられ寝れなかった、笑　なんだかなぁ・・・
帰りの飛行機の中で、子供も二人いるのに、仕事も切羽詰まって、9月からは新しい学校に転校して、夫は激務で、といろいろある中、ジュエリーをやりたい一心で思い立ってイタリアにこれて本当によかったと思いました。もう無理かも、とあきらめる方が勇気をもって一歩踏み出すよりずっと簡単です。でもこの一歩は私の人生の中での大きな一歩になったことは間違いありません。もし、行ってみたいけど無理かも、と迷っている方がいれば、私は勇気をもって一歩踏み出すことを強くお勧めします！無理に見えても、意外と行けるし、その先の道の開け方が、自分が想像するよりずっと大きいからです。最後に、この機会をくださったすべての方々に心から感謝いたします。とても楽しい2か月間でした、ありがとうございました！
