Furniture Restoration Summer Course (#4) – R.T.

On Monday’s class, we continued working on the wooden joinery. I focused on cutting the saw just inside the marked lines and using a metal file to achieve a flat surface. After that, we continued restoring the rattan chair and observed the teacher demonstrate fixing it with a two-part adhesive.

Tuesday brought a challenging wood joinery project. The work was significantly more intricate and difficult, requiring techniques like cutting at an angle, but I managed to complete the shape. There were many gaps and plenty of issues, so I plan to practice more at home after returning to Japan.

Later, I tackled frame restoration for the first time. It was an 18th-century piece with disassembled parts. That day, I observed the teacher connecting parts with adhesive. Seeing the teacher simulate the process multiple times taught me the risk of leaving visible repair marks from a single mistake.

On Wednesday, I worked on the frame restoration. That day, I performed the preparatory steps before gluing the disassembled parts. I smoothed the surfaces of designated areas with a knife and chisel and scraped away excess plaster. This frame had several spots that appeared to have been repaired previously using cloth, newspaper, plaster, and animal glue. Afterwards, I prepared for restoring a rattan chair. I prepared wood to fill the missing sections, glued it with wood glue to build thickness, and clamped it for several days. Thursday’s class ended with work on restoring the frame. We carefully applied shellac to the gold leaf areas to prevent adhesive from adhering, then bonded the pieces with great care. We proceeded to remove any excess adhesive. Furthermore, reinforcing the back with a mixture of adhesive and sawdust to preserve the antique appearance struck me as simply amazing. During this process, I also learned the importance of discerning when to use traditional materials (glue, shellac) versus modern techniques (epoxy resin adhesive).

On Friday, I reinforced the back of the frame. I strengthened wobbly areas with support pieces shaped using a coping saw. I also filled surface defects with epoxy resin filler. Matching the complex pattern and symmetry proved difficult. Since gold leaf would be applied over the filler, it needed to be applied slightly below the surface level, which was also challenging.

On Sunday, I visited Pisa and Lucca. In Pisa, I climbed the Leaning Tower, experiencing its unique tilt. In Lucca, an antique market was being held that day, and I was interested, so I went to check it out. It was held on a large scale along the entire street, featuring a wide range of items like coffee cups, picture frames, paintings, and furniture. The furniture included many pieces with cat’s paw legs and inlaid work, and the antique atmosphere was fantastic. Also, mixed in with the antiques were many artificially aged creations, making me appreciate the high level of skill in Florence for making things look old.
