On the 16th day of my stay in Italy, I began the final finishing touches on the marquetry. I applied several coats of shellac alone, allowing each to dry, to ensure no residual Vaseline remained on the surface. イタリアに来て16日目の授業では、象嵌の最終仕上げを最初に行なった。表面に残ったワセリンを残さないようにシェラックのみで何回か塗装し乾燥させる。それを乾燥している間に彫刻にモルデンテというものをお湯で希釈し、着色作業を行なった。

Additionally, I began restoring a chair from the 1800s. My task was to remove the rattan-woven seat. I plan to reinforce the deteriorated sections with new wood afterward.

さらに、1800年代の椅子の修復に着手した。自分がやったことはラワンで編まれた座面を撤去した。その後劣化した部分を新しい木材で補強する予定である。

Once the inlay dried, the teacher trimmed off the excess parts. I then chamfered the edges and colored the sides. The inlay work is now complete.
The next day’s class continued the chair restoration. I removed peg-like pieces connecting the wooden seat support to the rattan, along with rattan scraps, then drilled holes to prepare the holes. As I worked, it became clear the chair was more deteriorated than expected, and past repair marks were revealed. The teacher determined we needed to reevaluate the restoration plan. Therefore, the chair restoration was paused at the hole preparation stage. Afterwards, I finished by lightly applying shellac to the carving for a glossy finish.

象嵌が乾いたら、余分な部分を先生が切り取ってくれて、自分が面取りと側面に色をつけた。象嵌はこれで完成である。
翌日の授業では、椅子の修復の続きを行なった。椅子の座面を支える木の部分とラワンをつなぐ杭のようなものやラワンの切れ端を取り除き、ドリルで穴を整える。作業していくうちに、椅子が思っているよりも劣化が進んでいることや過去の修復痕が判明し、今後の修復方針を再検討する必要があると先生が判断した。そのため、椅子の修復は穴を整えるところで中断することになった。その後、彫刻にシェラックで軽く艶出し作業を行なって終了した。

On the 18th day of class, we applied colored beeswax to the Renaissance-style carving to give it an antique, well-worn look. We also tried our hand at mortise and tenon joinery. We made cuts with a saw, shaped the pieces with a chisel, and adjusted them with sandpaper. The sizing was very precise, requiring multiple adjustments and taking a lot of time.

18日目の授業では、ルネサンス風の彫刻に色付きの蜜蝋を塗布し、アンティークのような使い古された感を表現できるようにした。また、組み木に挑戦させてもらった。ノコギリで切り込みを入れ、のみで整形し、やすりで調整した。とてもサイズにシビアで、何度も調整しなければならずとても時間がかかった。

On Friday, we visited an artisans’ exhibition in Florence. We viewed diverse works like jewelry, furniture, and shoes. It was especially fascinating to see someone actually weaving rattan. I bought orange jam and a handmade ring as souvenirs.

金曜日にはフィレンツェで職人たちの展示会を見学した。ジュエリーや家具、靴などの多様な作品を観覧することができ、特にラワンを実際に編んでいる人がいて見ていてとても面白かった。お土産としてオレンジのジャムとハンドメイドの指輪を購入した。

Took a short trip to Bologna. Explored the large churches and squares. There was a massive flea market that day, filled with interesting antiques like accessories, furniture, and posters. I felt like I wanted to visit again.

ボローニャへ小旅行に行った。大きな教会や広場を散策した。その日大規模な蚤の市があって、アクセサリーや家具、ポスターなど興味深い古物が多く、再訪したいと感じた。
