On the 9th day, I created a frame with floral inlay patterns. I cut out plywood panels, glued them together with animal glue, and carefully applied pressure to ensure proper bonding.

9日目は、花模様の象嵌の枠を作成した。ベニア板を切り出し、膠で貼り合わせて圧力のかけ方を工夫しながら接着した。

Additionally, as a new task, I was given the opportunity to try Renaissance-style wood carving decorations. After rounding the wood with a plane, I used a carving knife to create a spiral vine pattern. I felt my own lack of precision in cutting the plywood and my limited skill with the plane and chisel, truly appreciating the high level of expertise required of craftsmen.

また、新しい作業として、ルネサンス風の木彫り装飾に挑戦させてもらった。鉋で丸く削った後、彫刻刀で蔓の螺旋模様を表現した。自分のベニア板の切り出す正確さや、鉋や彫刻刀の使い方の技術不足を感じ、職人の熟練度の高さを実感した。

On the 10th day of class, I first worked on finishing both inlay patterns up to the stage before applying the gloss. This involved cleaning the surface using steel wool and sandpaper. After that, I continued carving the wood into Renaissance-style decorations. I’m amazed by the master craftsman’s skill every day.

10日目の授業では、両方の模様の象嵌を艶出しの前の段階まで仕上げることをまず行なった。鉄板や紙やすりを使って表面きれいにすることなど。それが終わったら、引き続き木材をルネサンス風の装飾に彫る作業の続きを行なった。職人の先生の技術に日々驚かされる。

On the 11th day, the lacquering process for the inlay began. A material derived from lac bugs is dissolved in alcohol and applied. The amount of alcohol is adjusted depending on the situation and circumstances. Hand pressure and speed are crucial, and since it’s repeated many times, it’s a task requiring patience. After progressing to a certain point, we moved on to part of the process for making the frame, struggling with the task of shaving it evenly with a plane.

11日目は、象嵌に艶出しの塗装する作業が始まった。カイガラムシ由来の材料をアルコールで溶かして塗布する。状況・場合によってアルコールの量を調節する。また、手の圧力やスピードが重要で、何度も行うので忍耐力のいる作業となっている。ある程度行った後、額縁を作る作業に行う一部の工程をすることになり、鉋で均等に削る作業に苦労した。

Once the inlay dried, we repaired scratches and gaps using a filler made from clay and lime. I think I did this repair well, as I had done it before during my part-time job in Japan.

象嵌の方が乾いたら、傷や隙間を土や石灰を使った充填材で補修をした。この補修は日本でのバイトでやってきていたので、上手くできたと思う。

On the 12th day, the filler from the previous day had hardened, so I trimmed the excess and finished it with sandpaper and steel wool. I took care not to remove too much of the existing finish. After that, I learned the second stage of polishing. Using a thicker shellac and petroleum jelly, I tackled the process of achieving a deeper shine without damaging the previous day’s finish layer.

12日目は、前日の充填材が固まったので余分なところを削り、やすりとスチールウールで仕上げを行なった。塗装をなるべく剥がさないように注意した。その後、艶出しの2段階目を学んだ。濃度の濃いシェラックとワセリンを使用し、前日の塗装の層を壊さないようにさらに深い艶を出す工程に挑戦した。

Over the weekend, I visited museums. My interpreter told me admission is free on the first Sunday of the month, so I went to the Uffizi Gallery, the Accademia Gallery, and Palazzo Pitti. It was great to see paintings from the Renaissance era and the interior decorations of the buildings firsthand.

週末は、美術館に行った。月の最初の日曜日に入場料が無料になることを通訳さんに教えてもらい、ウフィツィ美術館とアカデミア美術館とピッピ宮殿に行った。ルネサンスを築いた当時の絵画や、建物の内装を実際に目の当たりにすることができてよかったと思う。
