This week marked the first week of the antique furniture restoration course.
今週はアンティーク家具修復コースの一週目でした。

【Class】
Classes were held not at the school, but at the workshop of a renowned furniture restorer in Florence. Since I had almost no experience working with wood, we started by learning the techniques used in antique furniture restoration.
First, we learned a technique called Intarsio, or marquetry. We cut thin wooden panels to fit a pattern, then inlaid them onto a wooden block to create a piece we could bring back to Japan.
【授業】
授業は、学校ではなくフィレンツェの有名な家具修復職人の工房で行われました。木材を扱う経験がほとんどないため、アンティーク家具修復で使う技術を教わるところから始まりました。
まずは、Intarsioと呼ばれる寄木細工の技術を教わりました。模様に合わせて薄い木の板を切り出し、それを木のブロックに貼り付けて日本に持ち帰ることのできる作品を作ります。

We received detailed explanations for each step, including the names of tools and materials. Using glue made from cow bone was just one of many unfamiliar things for a novice like me, which made it fascinating.
道具や材料の名前など、細かいところまで一工程ずつ説明してもらいました。牛の骨でできた糊を使うなど、未経験の自分にとっては未知のものが数多くあり、面白かったです。

While waiting for the glue to set, I also learned techniques for creating antique furniture frames. When a frame is chipped or detached, you need to create an exact replica of the original frame. This involved shaping wooden blocks using various types of planes to achieve the desired form.
また、糊が固まるまでの間に、アンティーク家具のフレーム部分を作る技術も教わりました。家具のフレーム部分が欠けていたり、取れてしまった場合に、元のフレームとそっくりのものを新たに作る必要があり、それを作る技術を教わりました。木のブロックを様々な種類の鉋で削り、作りたい形に寄せていくという作業です。

Just like during bag-making, both the teacher and interpreter were kind, making the work enjoyable. The furniture restoration workshop especially had a warm, cozy atmosphere, and the woodworking itself had a relaxing effect.
カバン作りの時もそうでしたが、先生も通訳さんも優しく、楽しく作業できました。特に、家具修復の職人さんの工房はほんわかな雰囲気があり、木を削る作業もリラックス効果がありました。


【Outside Class】
Outside class, I visited many museums and churches throughout Florence. I bought a Firenze Card, a 72-hour pass, and toured from morning till night. Even so, Florence has so many museums it was impossible to see them all.
【授業以外】
授業以外では、フィレンツェ市内の多くの美術館・教会を訪れました。Firenze Cardという72時間のパスを購入し、朝から晩まで巡りました。それでも回りきれないほど、フィレンツェには数多くの美術館があります。

For sculpture, I especially loved the Bargello Museum, which houses many sculptures, and the Sagrestia Nuova within the Medici Chapel, where Michelangelo’s sculptures are particularly impressive.
彫刻でいうと、彫刻作品が数多く置かれているバルジェロ美術館と、ミケランジェロの彫刻が印象的なメディチ家礼拝堂内のSagrestia Nuovaが特に好きでした。

For paintings, the Uffizi Gallery has the largest collection. Other recommendations include the Accademia Gallery, famous for the David statue; the Hall of Mirrors and the Maggi Chapel in the Medici-Riccardi Palace; and the Brancacci Chapel.
絵画でいうと、ウフィッツィ美術館が作品数が多く、ダヴィデ像で有名なアカデミア美術館、メディチリッカルディ宮殿の鏡の間とマージ礼拝堂、ブランカッチ礼拝堂などもおすすめです。

Regarding spaces, the Church of Santa Croce is beautiful not only because it houses the tombs of many great figures but also for its lovely courtyard. The Medici Chapel, Palazzo Vecchio, and the Basilica of San Michele in Forno were also excellent.
空間でいうと、サンタクローチェ教会も数々の偉人が眠っているという他に中庭が美しく、メディチ家礼拝堂・ヴェッキオ宮殿・オルサンミケーレも良かったです。

Considering buying individual tickets, places like the Medici-Riccardi Palace and the Brancacci Chapel, which have fewer works, might feel a bit pricey for someone like me with limited knowledge. The Firenze Card was great for easily accessing places I was only mildly interested in.
単体でチケットを買った場合を考えると、メディチリッカルディ宮殿、ブランカッチ礼拝堂など、作品数が少なく知識のない自分のような人にとっては割高に感じるような場所もあります。少し気になる程度のところも、Firenze Cardでは気軽に入れるので良かったです。

However, rather than trying to visit as many museums as possible within the time limit, focusing on fewer places for a more thorough appreciation might have made for a more concentrated experience. Ultimately, the Bargello Museum, where I spent more time appreciating the art, left the strongest impression.
ただ、時間内にできるだけ多くの美術館に訪れようとするのではなく、数を絞ってじっくり鑑賞する方が濃度の高い時間を過ごせたかもしれません。結局のところ、鑑賞に時間をかけたバルジェロ美術館が一番印象に残っています。

After cutting. Shading is applied by exposing the desired areas to heated sand.

Cow bone glue. This is placed in a pot with water and melted over a double boiler to create liquid glue.
牛の骨の糊。これを水と一緒に鍋に入れ、湯煎で溶かして液体の糊にする。

Roughening the surface of a wooden block with a special plane before attaching thin wood panels. This increases friction to prevent shifting during attachment.
薄い木の板を木のブロックに貼り付ける前に、木のブロックの表面を専用の鉋でギザギザにして摩擦を増やして、貼る時にずれないようにしているところ。
