This week was the final week of bag-making.
今週は、カバン作りの最終週でした。

On Monday, I finished the bag I started last week.
I spent time perfecting the design details, so it took a total of four days, but in the end, I was satisfied with the bag.
月曜日は、先週作りはじめたカバンを仕上げました。
デザインの細部をこだわるのに時間をかけたため、全部で4日間かけてしまいましたが、最終的には満足のいくカバンになりました。

Since I needed to complete a new bag within the remaining three days, I chose a third bag using an existing pattern rather than an original design. After that, I worked at breakneck speed for the first two days, relying heavily on the help of the teacher and interpreter. Then, on the final day, I finished it safely with time to spare. I used the extra time to learn various sewing techniques.
残り3日間で新たなカバンを完成まで持っていく必要があったため、三つ目のカバンはオリジナルデザインではなく、既に型紙があるものを選びました。その後、最初の二日間は先生と通訳さんの助けを大いに借りながら猛スピードで進めました。そして、最終日は時間に余裕を持って無事完成させることができました。余った時間で様々な裁縫テクニックを教えていただきました。

Since there were no other students during this period, I was very lucky to have the teacher and interpreter working closely with me, just the three of us. Although it was my first time attempting bag making, I experienced the entire process: pattern making, cutting, gluing, and machine sewing. As a result, I gained a clear picture of the whole bag-making process and could imagine whether I’d like to continue and, if so, what future challenges I might face.
この時期は、他の生徒さんがいなかったため、先生や通訳さんと三人で作業するような形で、つきっきりで見てもらうことができたのが非常にラッキーだったと思います。初めてカバン作りに挑戦しましたが、型紙作り・裁断・糊付け・ミシン縫いなど一通りの工程を経験することができました。結果として、カバン作り全体に対するイメージが付き、今後続けていきたいかや続けるなら今後の課題点なども想像することができました。

Regarding the bags I made, I was also able to challenge myself with an original design (apparently partly because my work was very meticulous), and I was extremely satisfied to have made three bags in just two weeks. However, I often needed help from the teacher and interpreter, so I want to become able to work more quickly on my own in the future.
作ったものに関しても、オリジナルデザインのものにも挑戦することができ（自分の作業が非常に丁寧だったことも理由の一つらしいです）、2週間で3つもカバンを作ることができたので大満足でした。しかし、先生や通訳さんに手伝っていただくことも多かったため、今後は一人でもっとスピーディーに作業ができるようになりたいです。

Overall, it was a very enjoyable two weeks. I also had other experiences like going out for delicious meals and traveling, but making bags was the most memorable and enjoyable part.
I can’t thank the teacher and interpreter enough.
全体的に非常に楽しい2週間でした。美味しいご飯を食べに行ったり、旅行に行くなど他の経験もできましたが、その中でもカバン作りが一番印象に残るほど楽しかったです。
先生と通訳さんには感謝しかありません。

2個目のカバン。綺麗に見せるために開口部をfrancese という技法で覆った。

In last week’s post, I mentioned that inserting the leather diagonally works well, but apparently this causes the stitching to ripple, which isn’t good. The key is not to worry too much about the bag’s weight; just hold the fabric right in front of the needle firmly and straight, and the sewing machine will naturally sew straight. I imagined this concept of letting the machine do the work is similar to driving a car.
先週の投稿で革を斜めに入れると良いと書きましたが、これをすると縫い目が波打ってしまうため、良くないとのことです。カバンの重みはあまり考えず、針の手前にある生地だけをしっかり真っ直ぐ持てば、ミシンが自然と真っ直ぐに縫ってくれるとのことです。機械に任せるという意味では、車の運転とイメージは同じなのかな、と勝手に想像していました。

I visited Prato, a neighboring town. Prato is famous as one of Italy’s leading textile production areas, and the Textile Museum was fascinating. I also saw clothes by Armani and Balenciaga at a special exhibition.
隣町のプラートに行きました。プラートはイタリア有数の繊維産地として有名で、織物博物館が面白かったです。特別展でアライアやバレンシアガの服も見ることができました。

I took a day trip to Pisa. I was surprised by how much the Leaning Tower of Pisa actually leans.
日帰りでピサに行ってきました。ピサの斜塔が思ったより傾いていて驚きました。

The third bag. She emphasized that when sewing, it’s crucial to sew so the bag’s sides are visible.
3つ目のカバン。縫う時は、カバンの側面が見えるように縫うのが大事だと言っていました。

The final step for the third bag. To hide the inner seams, she glues fabric (thin leather in this case) over them.
3つ目のカバンの最後の工程。内側の縫い目が見えないように通常は布（今回は薄い革を使用）で縫い目を覆うために糊付けをしています。

Went on a day trip to Bologna with my chef course roommate. She said the lasagna verde, made with spinach mixed into the dough, was the most delicious lasagna she’d ever tasted. We also visited the University of Bologna, the oldest existing university in the world.
シェフコースのルームメイトと日帰りでボローニャに行きました。ほうれん草を生地に混ぜ込んだlasagna verdeが、今まで食べたラザニアで最高級に美味しいと言っていました。現存する世界最古のボローニャ大学も見てきました。

On Sunday, there was a carnival in Florence, creating a festive atmosphere.
日曜日にはフィレンツェでカーニバルがあり、ちょっとしたお祭り騒ぎでした。

Since museums are free on the first Sunday of the month, we went to the Uffizi Gallery. Seeing masterpieces like Botticelli’s ‘Primavera’—works featured in textbooks—was truly moving. I think you’d need 4-5 hours to properly see everything.
月の最初の日曜日は美術館が無料で観覧できるため、ウフィッツィ美術館に行きました。ボッティチェリの『春』など、教科書にも載るような作品もあり、感激でした。全部をじっくり見るには4,5時間必要だと思います。

On the way back from Pisa, we stopped at the port town of Livorno. Small boats lined the canals leading to the sea, and some ships were just setting sail. Parts of the townscape reminded me of Venice.
ピサの帰りに港町リヴォルノに行きました。海に繋がる水路には小舟が並んでいて、ちょうど出港する船もありました。所々ヴェネチアを思い起こさせるような街並みでした。
