This week was the first week of bag making.
Luckily, since it’s not a busy time of year, I had one-on-one lessons with the teacher.
First, on the first day, I made a pouch to get used to bag making. I used leather I brought from Japan, about B3 size. Since we started right away on the first day, it’s good to have the leather prepared beforehand.

After that, I could have made a small handbag or a shopping tote, but I had a specific bag I wanted to make. After discussing it with the teacher, we decided to start on that instead. So, I went out that same day to get additional leather (the teacher will tell you recommended shops for sourcing).

We made the pattern (mainly the teacher did this), cut the leather, and I was able to create something to my exact preferences, down to the detailed measurements and design. The teacher showed me the steps, and I did the work myself. Since my pace is slow, the teacher and interpreter helped with cutting and such.

The teacher also worked while considering things like the best sewing method. I think I could really feel the process of coming up with a new design and creating it from scratch.

I had a general idea of what I wanted to make, but needing to decide on such minute details caused me to get stuck, consuming a lot of time. If you have a clear vision, you can use your time more efficiently. Completing the bag I wanted ended up being postponed until the following week.

For sightseeing, since I arrived in Rome from Japan, I visited again that day, and then again on Thursday after class and Friday. I’d been to Rome before, but there were still places I wanted to see, so it worked out perfectly. I also got to see an AS Roma soccer match, which I’d long wanted to do.

Although the bag-making class was just me, the teacher, and the interpreter, I became friends with someone from my Italian class and we had dinner together in Florence.

今週は、カバン作りの1週目でした。
ラッキーなことに、この時期は人があまりいないため、先生と1対1の授業でした。
まず、初日はカバン作りに慣れるためにポーチを作りました。材料は、日本から持ってきたB3サイズほどの革を使いました。初日から取り掛かるため、最初に革を用意しておくと良いです。

その後は、小さいハンドバッグかショッピングのトートバッグを作ることもできたのですが、作りたいカバンがあったので、先生と相談して、そっちに取り掛かることにしました。そのため、その日に追加の革の調達に行きました（調達するおすすめの店は先生が教えてくれます）。

型紙を作り（主に先生が）、革を切って、細かい採寸やデザインまで自分好みのものを作ることができました。先生に手順を教えていただき、自分でやるといった流れです。自分の作業ペースが遅いので、先生と通訳さんも裁断などを手伝ってくださいました。

先生も、どういう縫い方が良いかなどを考えながら作業を進めていくといった流れで、新しいデザインを考え、一から作っていく流れを感じ取ることができたと思います。

自分はなんとなく作りたいもののイメージはありましたが、すごく細かいところまで決める必要があるため、悩んでしまい、そこに多くの時間を取ってしまいました。もし、明確なイメージをつけることができれば、時間を有効に使えると思います。作りたいカバンの完成は、結局週明けまで持ち越しとなりました。

観光面では、日本からの到着がローマだったためその日と、また木曜日の授業後と金曜日を使って再びローマに行きました。以前ローマに行ったことはありましたが、見たいところが残っていたのでちょうど良かったです。また、念願のASローマのサッカーの試合も見ることができました。

また、カバンの授業は先生と通訳の方のみでしたが、イタリア語の授業で一緒になった方と仲良くなり、フィレンツェで一緒に夕食を食べました。

The pouch I made on the first day of class. Cutting out the squirrel pattern was tricky. This week, I realized my challenges are poor cutting skills (especially cutting straight lines) + spending too much time on small details.
授業初日に作ったポーチ。リスの模様を裁断するのが難しかった。今週発見した自分の課題は、裁断が下手（特に、まっすぐ裁断するのが難しい）＋細かい部分に時間をかけすぎる。

We walked to eat Florence’s famous lampredotto. In Italy, public transport in cities rarely runs on time, so walking is sometimes faster.
フィレンツェ名物のランプレドットを食べに歩いて行った。イタリアは、市内の交通機関は基本的に時間通りに来た試しがないので、歩く方が早い場合もある。

When sewing thin, stretchy leather lining or multiple layers of leather, the leather can pull and make it hard to sew straight. In those cases, you need to adjust by tilting the leather diagonally while watching where the sewing machine needle pierces.
裏地の薄い伸縮性のある革や、複数枚革を重ねた部分を縫う際は、革が引っ張られてまっすぐ縫うのが難しい場合もある。その時は、ミシンの針がどこに刺さるか見ながら、革を斜めに向けるなど調整する必要がある。
