Legendary Italian luxury brands like Gucci, Salvatore Ferragamo, Emilio Pucci, and Roberto Cavalli were all proudly founded in Florence. Also, Florence hosts important fashion fairs such as "Pitti Immagine Uomo", held at Palazzo Pitti twice a year, and “Moda Prima”. In our Fashion Design course, we do not teach just design but culture, productivity, marketing, and communication as well as their connections. Fashion design is closely related to the industries that research new trends for the market. The market is constantly looking for professional fashion designers. Students will be given an overview of the Italian Fashion System and stimulated while learning to develop their ideas and their potential to the fullest.
At the end of the course, students will have learned to do fashion sketches, carry out research on a given theme, and properly use the materials gathered from that research to develop a fashion project. Classes take place in several stages with the proposal of a theme (different every time) to work on. This will also enable the student to find ideas and start to do the job by searching for images, materials, and colors. All courses are hands-on training: students start learning hand sketching techniques, and later develop a personal original design collection, through the use of professional software (mostly, "Adobe Photoshop", and "Illustrator").
Since our teaching method is based on individualized instruction, the development of the various project phases will be adapted to the various levels of knowledge, the ability of the student, and the hours available. The topics on which students will work may be more or less complex, including clothes inspired by natural shapes, a contemporary artist's style, a specific textile, a stylist's collection, etc. The course introduces basic technical knowledge and design techniques, from the management of the creative process to the research of personal identity/brand. The goal is to equip students with fundamental fashion design techniques and a proper basic design methodology.
The Fashion Design Department offers a full-time, one-year design program leading to the Master Program in fashion design. This is the first professional program that stresses the development of technical skills and research and experimentation in the business of fashion design. Studying Fashion Design in Italy stands out as a unique experience that offers first-hand contact with that world, its protagonists, and events. As a matter of fact, in Italy only it is possible to experience and perceive the evolution of a fashion system as complex and multifaceted as this one. The Fashion Design Department proposes a wide-ranging approach including design, cultural, productive, marketing, and communication aspects through a constant dialogue with the professionals working in those sectors. Designing fashion is a fascinating, complex adventure that requires talent, outspoken passion, and expertise. The Master Course is meant to contribute to the development of professional figures capable of experience of expressing their creativity cleverly and addressing appropriately the complex themes of fashion. The curriculum is organized so that studio, laboratory, and classroom work give the graduate student a directed experience in the study of aesthetics, criticism, and contemporary art concepts; contemporary and historic art and design; current technology; the discipline of drawing; and the making of art. The goal of the Master's program is to integrate the understanding of design with the construction of clothing so that the final products answer physical, aesthetic, psychological, and social needs within the context of contemporary fashion and industrial limitations. This approach provides a sound basis for a broad range of employment in the fashion industry. Other professional opportunities lie in merchandising, costume design, curatorial work, and computer-aided design.
Students won't learn only design but culture, productivity, marketing and communication as well, as all of these disciplines are connected.
