Painting and Drawing vol.17 (One-Year Course – Kristin)

Every now and then, it’s important to revisit the things you’ve learned and the things you’ve seen. Not only does it give you the opportunity to look again, it can also be reassuring in your knowledge and skill. This week was full of exactly that –trying techniques and revisiting pieces with a new focus.

With the addition of several new students in our class at the start of Accademia Riaci’s summer course, Alessandro reviewed the sanguine technique. I took advantage of this time by creating another one and trying to perfect the technique. In the above picture, you can see my process. I used much harsher lines to achieve deep contrast. The last photo is the drawing washed with water, diluting and spreading the color. This created a paint-like overlay.

During my independent study hours, I finished my drawing of Diana. Professor Lorenzo gave me advice on how to better use my lines in a realistic drawing. I tend to avoid lines in later stages, but this advice stuck with me.

One thing that was on my to-do list this week was a commission from my friend Laura. She sent me this photo from the garden in her hometown in Lugo. I found this photo absolutely gorgeous; these Wisteria flowers are blooming throughout Italy.

I wasn’t sure which medium to approach it with, so I used just about everything. First, watercolor, then I touched it up and added intricate details with acrylics. Lastly, I added illustrative outlines to the flowers and their surroundings with a Micron pen.

For our Art Visit this week, we visited Santo Spirito and a Pallazza nearby. During our walk, our tour guide stopped and showed us this ancient Medicii building. Some original artwork was still alive on its tathered walls.
