Painting Drawing vol.10 (One-year 2019 – Kristin)

After completing my acrylic piece in Prof. Puccioni’s class, I gave her the exciting news about the upcoming exhibition. I told her that I wanted to do pieces inspired by Spring, like the oil paintings I’d started. Her and I were both excited to use “happier” colors.
After deciding on a floral arrangement photo, we put to use the pin-poke transfer technique. First, I used transfer paper to trace the image. Then I used a pin to poke tiny holes along the tracings. These holes are used to transfer pigment onto another surface. In this case, the surface is black, so I must use white chalk pastels over the holes for it to appear on the dark surface underneath.

This wouldn’t be my first time using pastels. I also started a self-portrait with this medium earlier. I’ve come to really appreciate chalk pastels and their flexibility. However, self portraits are not so easy. Even with much training in portrait drawing, I think self-portraits are another monster to tackle. Proportions are more difficult if you’re drawing from life (in a mirror) because you must stay completely stiff; you can’t turn your head and you must remember your facial expression and position. Alessandro was happy to help me with this.
