Jewelry Making Summer Course (#7) – Mi H.
7/28 Day 1
My flight from Greece was delayed, forcing me to stay overnight in Munich. This meant a hectic start—returning home in the morning and heading straight to class. I was a bit tired, but since I was starting work on my second Florentine engraved ring, I was really looking forward to making it. Even though I was late, I’m glad I could join the class. This time, I challenged myself with a geometric pattern. I carefully measured the dimensions, aiming for a precise finish—which was quite challenging… But visualizing the beautiful result, I meticulously cut out the pattern with a coping saw. In Japan, if you mess up a bit with the coping saw, you might just finish it off with a file. But Florentine engraving is incredibly fine and delicate. Files won’t work here, so you have to finish it perfectly with the coping saw. At first, I felt completely incapable, but after repeating a few patterns, I gradually got the hang of it. I was so focused on the work that before I knew it, the class was over, haha.
Since I was meeting a friend visiting from Japan for dinner tonight, I wandered around Piazza della Signoria in the evening rain and stumbled upon a wonderful concert. We enjoyed dinner at a restaurant where we could listen to the music!
ギリシアからのフライトが遅れ、ミュンヘンに一泊することになったため、朝帰国してそのままクラスに向かうというあわただしいスタートになりました。ちょっと疲れていたけど、フィレンツェ彫の二個目のリングの制作に入っていたので、作るのがとても楽しみで授業に遅れたけど参加できてよかったです。今回は幾何学的な模様に挑戦。しっかりと寸法を測り、きっちりとした仕上がりを目指して仕上げるのですが、これがまたチャレンジング…でも美しい仕上がりをイメージして、丁寧に模様を糸鋸で切り出していきます。日本だと、多少イトノコで失敗しても、ヤスリで仕上げる、となりそうですが、フィレンツェ彫は非常に細かく繊細。ヤスリは入らないので、糸鋸できっちり仕上げます。最初は全くできる気がしませんでしたが、いくつかパターンを繰り返すうちにだんだんコツがつかめてきました。作業に集中し、気づいたら授業が終わっていました、笑
今日は日本から来ていた友達と夜ご飯でも食べようということだったので、夕方は雨でしたがシニョリーア広場をうろうろしていると、素敵なコンサートが。音楽が聴けるレストランで食事を楽しみました！

7/29 Day 2
Today I continued working on the ring. I’m getting quite used to the cutting process, and today’s task was purely refining the small patterns with a coping saw. This is another task that requires intense concentration, and time just flies by. Before I knew it, the teacher announced, “Coffee break,” signaling our break time. That was exactly two hours after class started. Thinking about it, being able to focus so deeply on jewelry making in this environment feels like a dream come true compared to the reality of Tokyo, where I’m always rushing around.
Today, since my friend is still in Florence, we planned to explore the city together and hang out. First, we grabbed a light bite at the Central Market food court, enjoyed some wine, and then checked out the leather goods at the stalls lining up in front of the market. The market itself closes at 3 PM, but the food court seems to stay open until evening. Amid the lively atmosphere, we decided to eat at a meat shop where the samples we tried were delicious. After that, we went outside and were browsing the stalls when a guy started talking to us. As we were asking about the price, a stylish woman passing by said to him, “How much? 35 euros? That’s too much! Make it 25 euros!” (advice? order?). I immediately said, “Smile, I’ll buy two, so can you make it 20 euros?” He gave a wry smile and agreed. But I saw the same bag for 20 euros at a shop near the station (Santa Maria Novella). I wondered if street stalls just charge a bit more expecting haggling? I got two in different colors as souvenirs for my daughters. They’re cute and I’m happy ^^
Later, while having dinner, we strolled along Via San Spirito and found a nice wine bar where we enjoyed some wine!
今日は引き続きリングの作成です。切り出しの作業もだいぶ慣れてきて、今日はひたすら小さな文様を糸鋸で整えていくという作業。これもまた集中する作業で、時間がたつのがあっという間です。気づくと、先生が「コーヒータイム」といって休憩時間をお知らせしてくれます。つまりそれが授業開始から2時間後です。こんなにジュエリーの制作に集中できる環境も考えてみたらやることだらけの東京の現実からすると夢のように幸せな時間です。
さて、今日は引き続き友人がフィレンツェにいるので、いろいろ街を案内しながら、一緒に遊ぶことになっています。まずは中央市場のフードコートで軽くつまみつつ、ワインを楽しみ、マーケットの前にずらっと並ぶ屋台で革製品を見たりすることにしました。マーケット自体は3時に締まるのですが、フードコートは夜までやっているみたい。にぎやかな雰囲気のなか、試食したらおいしかったお肉のお店で食べることにしました。その後、外へ出ていろいろ屋台を物色していたら、お兄さんが話しかけてきたので、いくらか聞いていると、通りすがりのかっこいいお姉さんが、「いくら？35ユーロ？高いわよ、25ユーロにしてあげて！」とお兄さんにアドバイス（命令？）。すかさず2個買うから20ユーロにしてくれる？（スマイル）と言ったら、苦笑いしながらOKとのこと。でも、駅前（サンタマリアノヴェッラ駅）のお店で同じバッグが20ユーロで売られているのを見たんだけどね。屋台のほうが値切られる前提でちょっとお高めなのかしら？と思いました。色違いで2つ、娘たちへのお土産です。かわいくて満足^^
そのあと夜ご飯を食べつつ、サンスピリト通り沿いを散歩していて見つけたいい感じのワインバーでワインを楽しみました！

7/30 Day 3
Yesterday, a friend was staying near the Arno River, so I crashed at their place and spent an unusually late night in the city center! Since I’m out and about quite often in Tokyo, it felt strangely nostalgic, lol.
In the morning, I had breakfast at a lovely hotel right by the river. Cappuccino and croissant. It was surprisingly cool that morning—I almost needed a jacket.
Today, I continued working on the ring. I carefully finished it with a needle file to create a beautiful lace-like pattern. I’m getting quite used to the work now. That said, I still need a lot more practice. After the lesson, I went back to my favorite restaurant. The waitress greeted me with, “Hey, how’s it going? Thanks for the review!” It’s such a great restaurant, packed with customers every day, so I was thrilled she remembered me. Living in a city like this, I imagine you gradually get to know people and feel more at home, right? That thought made me happy, but sadly, I’m heading back to Japan next week… Until now, I’d been eager to visit other cities in Italy and elsewhere in Europe, but with just under two weeks left, I decided to fully enjoy Florence. Just a short walk takes you past historical buildings everywhere—it’s a city that feels like art itself. I truly felt again how wonderful it is to be able to live here for two months to learn jewelry making.
昨日は友達がアルノ川の近くにステイしていたので、私も泊めてもらい、珍しく遅くまで街の中心地で過ごしました！東京ではわりとよく出歩いているので、なんだか懐かしかったです、笑。
朝は、川の目の前の素敵なホテルで朝ご飯を食べました。カプチーノとクロワッサン。この日は朝はなんだか涼しくて上着がほしいくらいでした。
今日も引き続きリングの作成です。美しいレースのような模様になるようにイトノコで丁寧に仕上げていきます。だいぶ作業にも慣れてきました。とはいえ、まだまだ練習が必要です。レッスンのあと、またお気に入りのレストランへ。お姉さんが、元気―？レビュー書いてくれてありがとう！と迎えてくれました。おいしいレストランなので、毎日たくさんお客さんがくるでしょうに覚えてくれて嬉しい限り。こうやって街に住んでいると少しずつ顔見知りなどが増え、なじんでいくのかな？と想像して楽しくなりましたが、残念なことに来週で日本に帰国してしまいます… これまではイタリアのほかの都市やヨーロッパの別の都市に行くことに躍起になっていましたが、あと二週間弱、Firenzeの街を満喫しようとおもいました。少し歩けば、歴史的建造物が至る所にある、芸術そのもののような街。ここでジュエリーメイキングを学ぶために2か月暮らせることは本当に素敵なことだと改めて実感しました。

7/31 Day 4
Today is the last day of the metal engraving class (engraving class starts next week). Saying goodbye to the teacher who guided us for seven weeks is sad. After that, I really need to focus on finishing the ring with the engraving properly—I get so absorbed that time just flies by. Everyone works silently and diligently. But coffee during breaks is a must, lol The ring finished safely, and it looks like I’ll be ready for next week’s engraving class! I hugged the teacher one last time, thanked them, and said goodbye. The classes were always full of laughter and truly enjoyable. Isn’t the number of jewelry pieces I made pretty amazing?! (So impressed)

^ Since it’s Thursday, we have an art visit today. With some time before that, I went for lunch with classmates at a lovely spot on my favorite Via San Spirito! A stylish wine bar – lunch was delicious too. We had lamb ragù seasoned with chamomile, so very European (or is this common here…?)
Paired it with a Sangiovese wine!
After that, our art visit was a tour of the towers still standing throughout Florence. Apparently, powerful nobles in the past built towers near their homes for defense as well. So, most of the surviving towers are connected to the homes of influential noble families. We toured with our history teacher, Andrea. We visited towers associated with Dante, whom we’d studied before, and the Medici family’s corridor (which apparently stretched from Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti). The Medici family, who had many enemies, built this corridor to move between their residences at Palazzo Vecchio and Palazzo Pitti without coming into contact with the general public.
彫金最後の授業の日です（来週から彫の授業）。7週間お世話になった先生とお別れ、寂しいです。あとは彫を入れるリングをしっかり仕上げなくちゃ、とかなーり集中して、本当にあっという間に時間がたってしまいます。皆言葉少なにもくもくと作業を行います。でも休み時間のコーヒーはかかせません、笑
無事リングが完成し、来週から彫のクラスを迎えられそうです！最後に先生とハグして、お礼をいってさよならしました。いつも笑いたっぷりで本当に楽しい授業でした。作ったジュエリーの数、結構すごくないですか？！（感動）

今日は木曜日なので、アートビジットがあります。それまで時間があったので、最近お気に入りのサンスピリト通りの素敵なお店でクラスメートとランチにいきました！センスのいいワインバー、お昼もおいしかったです。羊のラグーにカモミールで味付けをしているというなんともヨーロッパ的な（こちらでは一般的なのかしら…）
サンジョベーゼのワインとともにいただきました！
その後、アートビジットで、Firenzeの街中に残っているタワー（塔）をめぐるというツアーです。昔有力な貴族は防衛の意味もかねて家の近くに塔を建てていたのだとか。なので、残っている塔はほとんどが有力な貴族の家にちなんだものだとか。ヒストリーの先生のアンドレア先生と一緒にめぐります。前にいったダンテにちなんだタワーや、メディチ家の回廊（ベッキオ宮殿からピッティ宮殿まで続いていたそうです）などを見学しました。敵の多いメディチ家、住居であるベッキオ宮殿からピッティ宮殿まで一般の人々に触れることなく移動するために作られたそうです。

8/1 Day 5
oday is Friday. Since I don’t have classes, I usually spend the day working, but for some reason the network was acting up and I couldn’t access my folders properly. So I decided to take advantage of this and wander around town! Around noon, I cheerfully set out from home. I’ve been getting tired of the clothes I brought from Japan recently, and since there are sales going on, I thought I’d buy some clothes. Oh, how delightful! lol I have terrible directional sense and a so-so memory, so I thought, “That cute shop was definitely on that street, right?” But I was usually wrong and couldn’t find it. Instead, I wandered down new streets and had unexpected discoveries… While searching for the shop, I wanted to have lunch in my favorite area, but most places had already closed for the day (many restaurants seem to shut down around 2 or 3 pm).
So, I had lunch at a cute little place I found. Lasagna and Chianti, finishing with a cappuccino. The cappuccino was surprisingly delicious! After that, I wandered some more and headed to a boutique near Santa Maria Novella station that had caught my eye. So many gorgeous dresses! Europe (or just Italy?) tends to have a lot of slim-fitting clothes, so they’re often surprisingly tight on me. This shop had slightly larger sizes? But to really show off the beautiful lines, they recommended an XS. After lunch, I thought, “No way!” but it was a perfect Cinderella fit!
As I was admiring how cute it was, she said, “This is so romantic! You’d look amazing wearing this for aperitivo.” I thought, “Well, I don’t have a date, and I just had wine by myself earlier…”
She also said it would match the pendant I was wearing. I blurted out, “I made it myself” (since I also work as a jewelry designer in Japan). “Oh my!” she exclaimed, “I’m studying jewelry too!” She’s learning jewelry making using glass techniques in a place called Sardinia—I didn’t catch the name—and we immediately exchanged Instagrams. So happy to have another jewelry friend!
今日は金曜日。授業がないので、だいたい仕事に充てるのですが、なぜだかネットワークの調子が悪くうまくフォルダにアクセスができなかったので、これをいいことに街をうろつくことに決めました！お昼ごろ、家からうきうきと出かけます。最近日本から持ってきた服がだんだん飽きてきたのでセールもやっているし服でも買おうと思ったのです。ああ、なんて楽しいのかしら、笑 私は方向音痴で記憶力もいまいちなので、かわいい服があったあのお店は確かあの通りのお店じゃないかなと思うのですが、だいたい間違っていて見つけられません。でも、その代わり、初めての通りに入り込んで新たな出会いがあったりする…店を探してうろうろするうちに、お気に入りのエリアでランチをしたかったのですが、営業時間が終わってしまっていました（だいたい2時か3時でいったんしまってしまうレストランが多いかもです）。
なので、見つけたかわいらしいお店でランチ。ラザニアとキャンティ、最後はカプチーノでしめました。カプチーノがびっくりするくらいおいしかったです！そのあとまたうろつきながら、サンタマリアノベッラ駅前で気になっていたブティックへ。すごく素敵なワンピースがたくさん！ヨーロッパ（イタリアだけ？）は割と細身の服も多いので、私は意外ときつかったりするのですが、このお店はちょっと大きめ？ですが、素敵なラインをしっかり魅せるためにXSをおすすめされました。食後だし、まさかーと思いましたが、まさにシンデレラフィット！
かわいくて感動していると、これとってもロマンチックね、これを着てアペロとか行ったら最高よ、と言われたので、私は相手がいなくて、さっき一人でワイン飲んできたけどね、と思いました。
つけているペンダントにも合うね、と言われたので、思わず私が作ったんです（日本でジュエリーデザイナーとしても活動しているため）といったら、あら、私もジュエリーを勉強しているのよ！と。サルディーニャというところで、名前を聞き取れませんでしたが、ガラスを使った技法でジュエリーメイキングを学んでいるそうで、さっそくインスタを交換。ジュエリー仲間が増えて嬉しい！
oday is Friday. Since I don’t have classes, I usually spend the day working, but for some reason the network was acting up and I couldn’t access my folders properly. So I decided to take advantage of this and wander around town! Around noon, I cheerfully set out from home. I’ve been getting tired of the clothes I brought from Japan recently, and since there are sales going on, I thought I’d buy some clothes. Oh, how delightful! lol I have terrible directional sense and a so-so memory, so I thought, “That cute shop was definitely on that street, right?” But I was usually wrong and couldn’t find it. Instead, I wandered down new streets and had unexpected discoveries… While searching for the shop, I wanted to have lunch in my favorite area, but most places had already closed for the day (many restaurants seem to shut down around 2 or 3 pm).
So, I had lunch at a cute little place I found. Lasagna and Chianti, finishing with a cappuccino. The cappuccino was surprisingly delicious! After that, I wandered some more and headed to a boutique near Santa Maria Novella station that had caught my eye. So many gorgeous dresses! Europe (or just Italy?) tends to have a lot of slim-fitting clothes, so they’re often surprisingly tight on me. This shop had slightly larger sizes? But to really show off the beautiful lines, they recommended an XS. After lunch, I thought, “No way!” but it was a perfect Cinderella fit!
As I was admiring how cute it was, she said, “This is so romantic! You’d look amazing wearing this for aperitivo.” I thought, “Well, I don’t have a date, and I just had wine by myself earlier…”
She also said it would match the pendant I was wearing. I blurted out, “I made it myself” (since I also work as a jewelry designer in Japan). “Oh my!” she exclaimed, “I’m studying jewelry too!” She’s learning jewelry making using glass techniques in a place called Sardinia—I didn’t catch the name—and we immediately exchanged Instagrams. So happy to have another jewelry friend!
今日は金曜日。授業がないので、だいたい仕事に充てるのですが、なぜだかネットワークの調子が悪くうまくフォルダにアクセスができなかったので、これをいいことに街をうろつくことに決めました！お昼ごろ、家からうきうきと出かけます。最近日本から持ってきた服がだんだん飽きてきたのでセールもやっているし服でも買おうと思ったのです。ああ、なんて楽しいのかしら、笑 私は方向音痴で記憶力もいまいちなので、かわいい服があったあのお店は確かあの通りのお店じゃないかなと思うのですが、だいたい間違っていて見つけられません。でも、その代わり、初めての通りに入り込んで新たな出会いがあったりする…店を探してうろうろするうちに、お気に入りのエリアでランチをしたかったのですが、営業時間が終わってしまっていました（だいたい2時か3時でいったんしまってしまうレストランが多いかもです）。

Today was our much-anticipated trip to Arezzo. This Tuscan town is famous for hosting one of Europe’s largest antique markets. It’s about an hour by train from Florence. A chimera statue stood right in front of Arezzo Station. A five-minute walk from the station brings you to the town center. Right there, the antique market was already in full swing, and everyone scattered in different directions, lol.
We had actually planned to visit a church, but since everyone went off on their own, we ended up exploring the antique market instead. I was completely captivated by the beautiful jewelry, silverware, Limoges porcelain, and more. When I come to Europe, I get so inspired I walk endlessly without even noticing my legs are killing me! But this market was enormous. Beyond tableware and silver cutlery, there was jewelry, books, knick-knacks, and furniture. It was all so beautiful, I thought if I lived around here, I’d definitely come to this market seriously shopping for furniture. While browsing, a small Limoges cup and saucer caught my eye, and I bought it! It was €8 each. After that, we all had lunch and returned to Florence. Later, I went to Ponte Vecchio with a jewelry-loving classmate. As always, this place is truly delightful. It’s irresistible for jewelry lovers. Before I knew it, I’d walked back and forth several times, haha.

本当は教会を見学する予定だったのが、みんなそれぞれどこかへ行ってしまったため、アンティークマーケットを見学する形になりました。私も素敵なジュエリーや銀食器、リモージュの食器などに目が釘付け。ヨーロッパに来ると刺激がたくさんで、足が棒になっているのも気づかずずっと歩き続けてしまいます！しかしものすごい数の市です。食器や銀食器などのカトラリーに加え、ジュエリー、本、雑貨、そして家具。これが本当に美しくて、このあたりに住んでいたらきっとこのマーケットに来て真剣に家具選びをしているだろうな、と思いました。そうこうするうちに、小さなリモージュのカップアンドソーサーに目が留まり、お買い上げしました！一脚8€でした。その後みんなでランチをして、Firenzeまで戻りました。その後ジュエリー好きのクラスメートとポンテベッキオへ。やはりいつ来てもここは本当に楽しいですね。ジュエリー好きにはたまらない場所です。気づいたら何往復もしていました、笑

Today is the last Sunday before my return home, and it’s also the first Sunday of the month. That means admission to Florence’s national museums is free. So, I decided to spend the morning visiting museums. Florence’s museums are incredibly rich in content, and especially for Riachi students, many of whom have a deep interest in art, a visit easily takes two to three hours or more. While I certainly love the paintings and sculptures themselves, I truly adore examining the ceilings, frames, door decorations, and such. It inspires jewelry designs, and I feel the exquisite aesthetic sense evident in Italian jewelry and throughout the city stems from this environment. First, I visited the Bargello Museum, which I hadn’t been to before. It displayed numerous sculptures by Donatello, which were magnificent. There were also jewelry pieces, and since I’d just been to an antique market yesterday, I found it fascinating to see how antique motifs originate from here. Beautiful ivory ornaments, coins, enameled furnishings—all truly splendid. After a light lunch, I strolled across the river, hesitating whether to visit the Uffizi again. That’s when I stumbled upon a museum owned by Baldini, an artist turned antique dealer, and went inside. A hidden gem? Hardly anyone was there, but the collection was quite remarkable. Especially the picture frames (lol)
A paradise for frame lovers. I savored every moment! They even had the real piglet statue from the Mercato Nuovo. Since it was evening, I skipped the Uffizi (the line was ridiculously long) and went to the gelato shop the interpreter recommended yesterday (the place next door had a huge line, but this one was empty). I got a double scoop of their recommended Chianti gelato and cinnamon gelato. The flavors were refreshing, melting smoothly on the tongue—absolutely delicious! I headed home feeling completely satisfied. It was the last Sunday of my summer in Italy, 2025 ^^
今日は帰国前の最後の日曜日であり、月の初めの日曜日でもあります。つまりフィレンツェ市内の国立美術館の入館料が無料の日です。なので、朝から美術館巡りをしようと決めていました。フィレンツェの美術館はものすごく見ごたえがあり、特にリアチの学生であればなおさら、アートに関心が高い人がおおいので、行くと軽く2－3時間以上はかかります。私も絵画や彫刻そのものももちろん好きなのですが、天井や額縁、ドアの装飾等を見るのが本当に好きです。ジュエリーのインスピレーションにもなるし、イタリアンジュエリーやそのほか街全体に感じられる美的センスのよさはこういう環境から生まれてくるんだと感じることができるからです。まずは、まだ行ったことがなかったバルジェッロ美術館に行ってみました。ドナテッロの彫刻の数々が展示され、素晴らしかったです。また宝飾品もあって、ちょうど昨日アンティークマーケットに行ったばかりだったので、ああ、骨董品のモチーフはここからきているんだと感じられてとても面白く鑑賞しました。美しい象牙の装飾品やコイン、エナメルを施した調度品など、とても素晴らしかったです。その後軽くお昼を取った後、川の向こうでぶらぶら散歩しながら、何度か訪れているウフィッツィへ行くかどうか迷いながら歩いていたところ、バルディーニという芸術家でその後アンティーク商となった人物の所有する美術館を見つけて中にはいってみました。こちらは穴場？というかほとんど人がいなかったですが、その貯蔵品はなかなか素晴らしかったです。特に額縁（笑）
額縁好きにはパラダイスのような空間。じっくりと堪能しました！Mercato Nuovoにある子豚像の本物もありました。
夕方だったので、ウフィッツィ（ものすごい長蛇の列）はあきらめて、昨日通訳さんに教えてもらったおいしいというジェラートのお店（隣はすごい列なのにこちらはすいていた）でおすすめのキャンティのジェラートとシナモンのジェラートをダブルでいただきました。さっぱりとした味わいで舌の上でさっととろけるようで、とてもおいしかったです！とても満ち足りた気分で家路につきました。イタリアで過ごす2025年の夏の最後の日曜日でした^^
