Furniture Restoration Summer Course (#6) – R.T.
Today, I worked on repairing the insect-damaged section of the table top. First, I removed the surface finish using a paint stripper. While paint strippers are often avoided as they can compromise the antique appearance, they were used here because the piece is late 19th-century furniture and the type of finish was unknown. Next, I injected acetone-based reinforcement material into the wood weakened by the insects. This material strengthens the wood by reshaping within the fibers and is considered more suitable for insect damage repair than traditional glue. After treatment, the previously fragile wood stabilized.
In the afternoon, I moved to repairing the rattan chair, shaping the reinforcement material to fit along the seat frame.
Continuing from the previous day, we carved the reinforcement material to fit the seat frame of the rattan chair. The original seat had a slope, requiring careful carving to match it, which took time, but we ultimately achieved a good fit with the frame.
Additionally, a graduate visiting the workshop requested repair of a broken umbrella handle. I observed the instructor’s work and assisted partially. The repair involved more than simple gluing: holes were drilled into the broken section, bolts inserted, and the assembly secured with adhesive. I gained insights applicable beyond furniture repair, such as using shims for stabilization and adhesive filling techniques.
In the morning, I stained the table legs. I tried applying potassium dichromate solution, lightly buffing it, then applying shellac, but the color tone still felt off.
While experimenting with multiple materials and dilution methods, I truly felt the difficulty of color matching and the differences in standards between countries. I also learned about diverse coloring agents like mordants and aniline, understanding the importance of selecting the appropriate material for each specific application in actual restoration work. Later, I mastered the technique of filling insect-damaged areas with epoxy putty and smoothing the surface with water.
In the afternoon, I observed the process of injecting animal glue into a crack in the tabletop using a syringe. The method of clamping while dispersing pressure, particularly useful when the surface is uneven, was especially instructive. Next, I finished the umbrella repaired the previous day and applied coloring to the reinforced sections of a rattan chair.
Furthermore, I began preparations for restoring an 18th-century card table, checking the detached components stored separately and performing temporary fixings. This provided an opportunity to encounter distinctive antique designs, such as the characteristic cat’s feet (actually based on a goat motif) and the leather-covered tabletop.
