Furniture Restoration Summer Course (#5) – R.T.

Monday
This day began with continuing the restoration work on the rattan chair. To repair the missing section of the seat, I prepared the surface by smoothing the curves to facilitate adhesion. I focused on preserving as much of the original structure as possible while adjusting the overall shape, then carved the replacement piece to fit the damaged area. However, fitting the replacement piece precisely proved difficult, and I couldn’t complete it on my own. Ultimately, the teacher had to make the final adjustments. It was my first time doing this, and I was left with the frustration of not being able to see it through to the end. I learned that when fitting the replacement piece, you need to identify exactly which parts are interfering and shave them away precisely. I strongly felt that mastering this “judgment of contact points” is a key challenge for the future.

This week, I began restoring a table made in the late 1900s. For the three broken legs, I first prepared the damaged areas and cut replacement pieces using the remaining intact leg as a template. After the teacher did the rough shaping, I refined the details myself using a metal file. Since the legs tapered toward the tips, I finished them while consciously maintaining that characteristic shape. For gluing, I aligned the replacement piece with the original leg and pressed it into place, securing it with fast-drying adhesive. After repairing the three legs, I moved on to leveling all four legs and preventing wobbling, but accurately judging the length differences proved challenging. This experience made me realize that not only restoration skills but also foundational knowledge of furniture making is essential.

Repairing the tabletop was smaller in scale than the legs but required greater delicacy. While I thought I could apply previous experience to shaping the chipped area and fitting the filler, the instructor pointed out insufficient precision in the bonding surface, necessitating major revisions. I keenly felt my lack of skill in determining “where to shave to achieve a precise fit.” Still, I gradually grew accustomed to the sequence of bonding the filler and shaving off the excess.

Friday
On this day, outside of class, I had the opportunity to speak with a Japanese marquetry artisan. This artisan had studied restoration techniques in Florence, gained experience in multiple workshops, and then established their own practice. We had a frank exchange about the differences between their approach and my class content and part-time work experience. What was particularly striking was how restoration in Florence is supported by a clear division of labor and strong horizontal connections. Commissioned pieces pass through the hands of specialized craftsmen for restoration, ensuring high-quality results. In contrast, Japan tends to rely on a single person handling a broad range of techniques, and I sensed this difference influences the level of development in restoration culture.
I also learned that in Florence, the purpose of restoration is divided into “for appreciation” and “for use,” with the approach determined through careful consultation with the client. I understood that a culture deeply rooted in respecting old things and using them for a long time supports the development of restoration. This dialogue became a major catalyst for me to consider what direction my activities should take upon returning to Japan.

Saturday and Sunday
No special work was done on these days. On Sunday, I went to the flea market at Sant’Ambrogio and bought a birthday present for a friend.
