Today’s class is about the backing of the bag and preparation for adding pockets. Each student brings the cloth of his or her choice.

The choice of cloth for backing is also important. For beginners, the teacher recommends to use simple cotton cloth with firm edge, instead of soft and edge easy to come undone.

First, you need to cut the cloth according to the size of the bag. The bag the student is working on has gusset, so the student fixes the backing cloth to the bottom and prepares a inside pocket to put small objects such as cellphone.

The size of the pocket, whether to add gusset to it or not, how to attach are decided in advanced. Bags with gusset are comfortable to use, but more difficult to sew compared with those without gusset. This time, the student chose the pocket edge fringed with leather bias tape and attached to the bag.

The bias tape is prepared using the same leather used for the exterior of the bag; make it thin with tanning machine so that it is easy to bend. The backing cloth chosen by the student easily comes undone, so before sewing glue was applied to attach the leather to the cloth.

Sewing the edge and attaching the pocket are relatively easy for students who have experience with sewing machine, but for those who have never used sewing machine before, it seems to be a challenging process.
