Between 10th to 8th Century BC, a tribe with rich culture and said to be the ancestor of Italians came to live in Tuscany. After the Roman Empire, invasion of German race, Florence became one of the few thriving city-states of Tuscany in 11th Century. During this century the artistic movement became significant in this city. During last half period of 13th Century there started to appear some world-renowned great artists such as Chimabue, Giotto and Dante.
In the early 12th Century, Florence became a self governed city-states commune. In 14th Century, while the church, the absolute authority and power of papacy were beginning to decline; some people are started questioning the way of the medieval Christian world and inspired by the realism and human oriented spirit. For that reason Renaissance movements were the first to flourish in Florence. Numerous numbers of great artists, and geniuses were brought out. Politically, under the leadership of Medici family Florence enjoyed the age of unprecedented prosperity and peace. |

Between the years 1494 and 1530 Florence took the form of Republic states for the period of time, but soon after the Medici family regained the power, in 1570 Cosimo the first was appointed to be the grand ducy of Tuscany, Florence saw and celebrated the second golden age. But it did not last long. In the year 1737, when the last of Medici family died out, Prince Loreine of Austria was to take over the title. In 1860 when 'Risorgimento' grose throughout Italy, The first unification of Italy was carried out under the reign of Vittorio Emanuele 2nd .
For five years from 1986, Florence served as Capital of Italy. However, the proud Florence, after the unification of Italy being supported by the 'Campanilismo' defends her own unique culture and the tradition. It is true in any region of Italy, the self-admiration of Florence is particularly well known. A chronicle writer, Dino Compani who lived in the same era as Dante, praised his country, saying "Fresh air, manners of the residents are very good, women are beautiful, well dressed, especially the housing are beautiful". |
