Taught in Italian or English
The drawing and painting major is housed in the division of studio art in Florence, Italy. The program's curriculum emphasizes creativity and self-expression and is designed to provide students with life-enriching skills. The major in drawing and painting prepares you to become either a self-employed artist or to pursue a master of fine arts degree. Self-employed artists show and sell work in galleries, museums and a variety of other venues. As a drawing and painting major, you will study not only drawing and painting, but also art appreciation, art history, design, and other studio arts. You will have access to instruction in a wide range of techniques. Our faculties reflect the diversity and plurality of contemporary drawing and painting, while being grounded in traditional and historical methods and precepts. An awareness of the breadth of what has been done in the past and what is being done in the present encourages students to relate their own practice to both history and the contemporary context. The students in Fine Art spend a lot of time in studio classes creating original works, studying aspects of the field and examining a variety of media with which to work. After completing intermediate painting or drawing, your portfolio is reviewed by the drawing and painting faculty to determine if you can continue in the program. Before graduation, you must exhibit your work in a show, which serves as an exit review. The studio art faculties are artists in their respective fields, maintaining private studios and gallery contacts. Each exhibits widely and travels extensively to maintain a current and high status in their field.
