Shoe Making

Students will learn all the traditional techniques of shoemaking, from the basic to high-level. In addition to various types of shoes, students can study shoes for specific necessities, such as shoes pursuing “simplicity and comfort”, “durability”, “functional shoes for feet with medical problems”, “elegance for parties”, etc. and acquire skills enough to start up their career as a shoemaker.

Styles & techniques.

- Décolleté (1 shoe, not a pair) from model making to the finishing.
- Inside-out model (reversed): model making and sewing.
- Chanel style sandal, both right and left foot shoes on request.
- Oxford shoe (Italian: "Francesina" style).
- Derby shoe.
- Moccasin.
- “Blake” construction.
- “Goodyear welt” construction.
- “Norwegian” construction.

Shoe Design

Students will create a collection of shoes with specific themes, such as specific age groups or market, selecting colors, textile, or designs to apply. Students will choose their topic, create shoe design plans, research various types of shoe designs, modern techniques, and special functions. Students will also study the structure of the human foot, draw several types of design, and prepare for more advanced design. Students will perform research on the variation of colors and materials, as well as market trend and learn to express their free ideas into the actual design. The ultimate goal of the course is that each student will acquire enough skills to start working as a professional.


Students enrolled in the "One-Year Course" will also acquire general inter-discipline knowledge of Italian art through basic essons (Art History, Painting, 3D Design, Color Theory) and take part to guided art visits and stages, to cultivate their artistic sensibilities and global perspective as a designer and complete a season’s collection.

Overview

Master Course students will pursue more advanced techniques of shoe making or shoe design according to their research topic. During the course, students will explore various aspects of shoe industry, including expression of creativity and techniques in shoe making/design process as well as practical process of sales and business side, with emphasis on practical application of their study to the shoe industry.

Accademia Riaci offers unique opportunities for students, thanks to its close relationship with leather industry. Students will have chance to learn first-hand how shoe production/design is realized through concept work-production-sales, by visiting shoe factories, shoe companies, etc. During the second semester of the course, students will work on “Corporate Study”, in which students can work on projects together with local companies/designers under supervision of the professor, to learn the actual production process in Italy, which is known for producing shoes of the highest quality in the world.

Shoe Making

Students will learn basic techniques of shoemaking through intensive lessons, making shoes for their own size. It includes all the steps of shoemaking, from measuring the size, cutting patterns, cutting leather, composing, sewing, and finishing. According to the length of the course and experience, students can produce various types of shoes.

Please note that the minimum duration of Shoe Making Art Short Course is 6 weeks.

Shoe Design

Students will study the fundamental techniques for shoe design, such as basic design, brief sketch, rendering basic, etc. and finish various types of shoe design (including finishing expression, developing variations by computer, research on materials, technical structure and its application, color variations and material variations, according to their experience and period of study. The students are encouraged to express their free ideas. Students with experience will learn specific design techniques according to the theme.

Leather Crafting in Italy

Florence above all Italian cities has been the center of the Italian leather industry, nurturing generations of highly skilled artisans and craftsmen, with an uncompromising insistence on quality and top-level techniques. Such a shoemaking industry now seeks to incorporate traditional and modern techniques, moving forward together with new market tendencies. In such fast-moving and globalizing environment, cultivating a new generation of shoemaking artisans who preserve the precious tradition of shoe industry is an utmost theme in Italy.

SHOE MAKING: Accademia Riaci offers students a rare chance to learn the authentic, top-level shoemaking techniques, directly from Italian leather artisans with highest skills and rich experience.
In our course, students can learn all the steps of the shoemaking process (making the last, cutting pattern, choosing materials, sewing, etc.) which can be worn for a long time.

SHOE DESIGN: students will learn design techniques of various shoes for different scenes and are unique, which is characteristics of Italian shoes. For example, precious shoes like jewelry, shoes that fit one’s feet as if it’s part of the body with an airy touch like a feather.
Students will research and analyze colors, patterns, shapes, and design and learn shoe design diversity, changes, and advanced application, and complete their own design. The main focus of the course is to encourage each student’s uniqueness and to convey it into design through original, free and rich expression.

Studio instructors are from Italian families, who has been making leather goods for generations. The studio is located in the area where aristocratic buildings are lined up. The instructor will show students every step of leather crafts in easy comprehensive manner.
Also, students will have a chance to visit, together with the instructor, The Salvatore Ferragamo Museum in Florence, a fashion museum dedicated to the life and work of Italian shoe designer Salvatore Ferragamo.
